The records of the United States Natural Resources Conservation Service contain materials related to soil conservation research in Pennsylvania, from 1900 to 2002. Materials include soil surveys of specific counties and regions, photographs, maps, and handbooks detailing survey techniques/procedures. The bulk of the material is directly related to Pennsylvania soils; exceptions include publications about soils in other regions of the United States and its territories or about soil and water use in the Soviet Union. Black-and-white photographs taken by Penn State Professor N document mulching, cover crops, and erosion on land owned by the Soil Conservation Experiment Station, Harvey Raffensperger (Biglersville, PA), and Charles Raffensperger (Arendtsville, PA) between 1938 and 1943. This collection also includes photographic slides of drawings detailing soil features. Maps accompany each country soil survey. Also included are regional, geologic, and topographic maps and atlases of Pennsylvania. The remaining portion of the collection consists of handbooks, bulletins, guides, and research publications. Handbooks cover photographic, mapmaking, and soil survey techniques, including a Munsell Soil Color Charts (1954) field manual. Bulletins address erosion, land-use, wildlife, and social/economic concerns. Research publications primarily address Pennsylvania soil issues, but also cover other regions of the nation or world.
